Yes you can. Here's how:

1. Start up your VPN client (e.g.: the Cisco VPN client) and connect to the network where the Pharsight floating license server is running.

2. Then launch Phoenix. Phoenix should already have been configured in the license manager preference to go out to the floating license server and check out a license. If its already been configured this way, it will remember its setting from the last time it was open and check out the same type of license(s) from the same license server again each time it launches.

3. Every 5 minutes, Phoenix checks to see if the license server is still available. If it is, you can continue to use Phoenix to build workflows, import data, run analyses, etc….

4. If the VPN goes down, Phoenix will check after 5 minutes and see that it no longer has a valid license and pop up a warning that your are no longer connected and can't do any more work.

5. You need to re-open the VPN connection to the Pharsight license server.

6. Then you need to go back into preferences and check out the license again (Edit | Preferences | Licensing | License Manager).

7. Then you can keep working as before without losing any work or having to restart Phoenix.

(FYI: Back on the license server, after the 5 minutes have expired and it hasn't heard back from the Phoenix desktop that checked out a license, it automatically checks back in the license that was lost when the VPN went down and makes it available to anyone else on the network.)
